Chicago, IL – The Lincoln Park Zoo is mourning the loss of a harbor seal and a Chilean flamingo after both died from avian influenza last week. These are the first animals at the zoo to succumb to the bird flu.

According to the zoo, testing confirmed the virus as the cause of death for both animals. The flamingo, named Teal, hatched this fall and had only begun bonding with her flock and keepers. The harbor seal, Slater, was seven years old and known for his energetic and curious nature.

On Facebook, the zoo expressed deep sorrow, describing Slater as a quick learner who excelled in training sessions. They called Teal a promising addition to their bird exhibit. “Both will be dearly missed,” the zoo wrote.

The source of exposure remains unknown. Zoo officials continue monitoring other animals for symptoms while enhancing biosecurity protocols.

The zoo assured visitors that the safety of animals and guests remains a top priority as they investigate further.
