Springfield, IL – Snow returns to central Illinois Friday afternoon and continues into Friday evening. A wintry mix could make travel hazardous, especially during the evening commute.

The National Weather Service reports that light to moderate snowfall will begin Friday afternoon, mainly north of a Rushville-to-Bloomington line. Snowfall amounts appear minor, but slick roads are expected.

By Friday night, snow transitions into a mix of freezing rain and rain. A 20-40% chance of freezing rain exists, which may create dangerous driving conditions. Temperatures warm slightly Saturday, turning precipitation into rain before colder air returns. Snow resumes Saturday night, leading to additional light accumulation.

Travelers should expect slower commute times, especially north of I-70. Officials urge drivers to stay informed and prepare for slippery roads.
