Chicago, Ill. – Scattered thunderstorms will continue developing across northern Illinois this afternoon and into the evening, bringing bursts of heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds that could slow travel across the Chicago metro and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist through 9 p.m. CDT. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, any storm will be capable of producing locally heavy downpours, cloud-to-ground lightning and wind gusts strong enough to create hazardous conditions for motorists and outdoor activities.

Storm coverage is expected to increase through the afternoon across much of northern Illinois, including Chicago, Rockford, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin, Waukegan, Kankakee and nearby northwest Indiana. The strongest cells will move east-northeast at 15 to 20 mph, producing brief periods of reduced visibility and ponding on roadways.

The heaviest rain could create localized travel delays during the evening commute, particularly on major routes including Interstates 90, 94, 55 and 80. Outdoor events may also face temporary interruptions as thunderstorms move through the area.

Residents are urged to head indoors immediately if thunder is heard and use extra caution while driving through heavy rain. Never drive through flooded roadways, and allow extra stopping distance on wet pavement.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to gradually diminish later this evening, though the National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring forecasts in case additional weather statements become necessary.
