Springfield, Illinois –Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across central Illinois this afternoon and evening as a cold front sweeps through the region, bringing gusty winds, lightning, and a sharp drop in temperatures heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs today will soar between 85 and 88 degrees before storms develop later in the day. A 60% chance of severe weather is forecast across areas including Springfield, Decatur, and Bloomington, with localized downpours and wind gusts over 50 mph possible.

The front’s passage will usher in a cooler, drier air mass, with weekend highs dipping into the low-to-mid 70s. Saturday could still bring a few lingering showers, but Sunday is expected to be dry and mild. Rain chances return Monday and Tuesday, with a 90% likelihood of widespread showers by early next week.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware during the evening commute, and have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Storm warnings remain possible through tonight, with cooler, more stable conditions expected to take hold by Saturday.
