Champaign, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms could rattle Champaign and parts of central Illinois late Easter Sunday into Monday, with hail and damaging winds likely.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered thunderstorms will push across east-central Illinois Sunday evening. Some storms may become strong to severe, bringing large hail and gusts near 50 mph. The primary risk window runs from 6 p.m. to midnight Sunday, with spotter activation possible across Piatt, Champaign, Vermilion, and surrounding counties.

Heavy downpours could lead to brief street flooding, particularly near low-lying roads and highways like I-72. Motorists should avoid travel during storm periods and secure outdoor items ahead of the gusty winds. The storm system tracks northeast at about 50 mph, affecting communities from Monticello to Danville.

By Monday, skies will gradually clear, but breezy west-southwest winds up to 26 mph may linger. Temperatures will reach the low 60s, but a noticeable cooldown follows. Frost-sensitive plants should be protected Monday night as lows dip into the mid-40s.

Looking ahead, Tuesday remains sunny and mild, with highs near 74°F. However, rain returns Wednesday night into Thursday. A brief warm-up Friday rounds out the week.
