Champaign, IL — Light snow is expected across parts of Central Illinois today, mainly north of I-72, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions. Accumulations are expected to be minor but could still make roads slick, especially during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service, snow chances will increase between late morning and midday, with temperatures staying below freezing along the I-74 corridor. South of I-70, conditions may trend warmer, reducing the likelihood of snow. Winds could make conditions feel even colder, with gusts up to 20 mph.

The forecast improves slightly Friday, with mostly clear skies and highs reaching the mid-30s. However, a new system will bring widespread rain Friday night into Saturday, with some areas north of the Illinois River potentially seeing a brief wintry mix before temperatures rise. Rainfall amounts on Saturday could reach up to one inch, accompanied by highs in the mid-40s.

Sunday offers a chance for scattered rain showers, with temperatures climbing into the low 50s — a significant shift from today’s winter chill. Early next week, cooler conditions will return, but precipitation chances remain low.

Drivers should remain cautious today, especially on bridges and overpasses, which could ice over. Prepare for rain-soaked roads this weekend, and check for updates as forecasts evolve.
