Altamont, IL – A tornado rated EF-1 touched down Wednesday evening, causing localized damage southeast of Altamont in Effingham County. The tornado, which lasted from 6:08 p.m. to 6:11 p.m., had peak winds reaching 105 mph and traveled along the ground for 2.55 miles, with a maximum width of 125 yards.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm caused structural damage near the beginning of its path, particularly around North 500th Street, just north of East 700th Avenue. In that area, a home sustained roof damage, while additional harm was reported to trees along the tornado’s route. Fortunately, there have been no injuries or fatalities associated with this event.
Effingham County residents are advised to remain alert as additional storm surveys continue to assess the full extent of the tornado’s impact. Local authorities are continuing to monitor for any further developments.
