Momence, Illinois – Elevated river levels along the Kankakee River are continuing to pose localized flood risks due to an ice jam, prompting a Flood Advisory that remains in effect until further notice.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, an ice jam is affecting the Kankakee River at Momence, with water levels fluctuating near flood stage. As of 10:45 a.m. CST Wednesday, the river stage was measured at 4.6 feet, just below the official flood stage of 5.0 feet.

The advisory covers the Kankakee River from the Illinois–Indiana state line downstream to its confluence with the Iroquois River at Aroma Park, including areas monitored by the Momence river gauge. Forecasters say river levels are expected to remain elevated as long as the ice jam persists, with the potential for sudden rises or falls in water levels.

Ice jams can cause unpredictable flooding with little advance notice, particularly in winter conditions. The National Weather Service notes that significant river ice can also interfere with gauge accuracy, increasing uncertainty in short-term river forecasts.

Localized flooding may impact wetlands, forested areas, agricultural land, and low-lying roadways near the river, especially roads adjacent to the riverbanks in and around Momence. Drivers are urged to use caution and avoid water-covered roadways, as conditions may change rapidly.

River forecasts during ice jam events are less certain due to shifting ice and flow conditions. Residents near the river are encouraged to remain alert for changing conditions and to monitor official updates.

The next river statement is expected to be issued by Thursday afternoon. Additional safety information is available at weather.gov/flood.
