Chicago, IL – Drivers on inbound Interstate 55 near Joliet Road in Bolingbrook will encounter a new traffic pattern starting Friday morning as part of an ongoing bridge reconstruction project.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), lane closures will begin Thursday at 9 p.m., with one inbound lane remaining open at all times. The closed lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday, May 2, when the new configuration takes effect. The changes will shift all three inbound lanes slightly to the right onto a newly constructed bridge deck over Joliet Road.

The updated layout eliminates the previous lane split at this location. IDOT stated that the exit and entrance ramps, as well as outbound I-55 lanes, will not be affected by the shift. However, there will be no shoulders in either direction throughout the work zone, which remains active.

Motorists are urged to expect delays and plan for extended travel times. IDOT recommends considering alternate routes and advises drivers to watch for signage, obey posted speed limits, and be alert for workers and equipment in the area.

This work is part of a $17.7 million project to replace the I-55 bridges over Illinois 53 and Joliet Road. The bridge over Illinois 53 was completed in 2024, and the Joliet Road section is on track for completion later this year. Enhancements include wider structures, resurfacing, and improved lighting.

The project is part of the broader Rebuild Illinois initiative, which aims to modernize over 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck statewide through 2030.
