Effingham County, IL – Drivers on I-70 should prepare for immediate slowdowns starting Monday as crews begin a major construction project at the Altamont interchange, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the $32.7 million project launched Monday and will rebuild bridges, repair pavement, and add safer merging lanes for truck traffic. Lane closures are now in effect, with restrictions expected to remain in place through November during this initial phase.
The construction zone sits along a heavily traveled stretch of I-70 in southern Illinois, frequently used by commercial and cross-state traffic. IDOT officials warn that backups could develop quickly during peak travel hours, especially near interchange ramps and bridge work zones beginning later in the project timeline.
Motorists traveling through Effingham County should plan for reduced speeds, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for changing traffic patterns. Officials also urge drivers to avoid distractions and follow posted signage as crews work close to active lanes.
This multi-year project will continue through 2027, with additional impacts expected as bridge construction ramps up. IDOT says updates and potential traffic changes will be issued as work progresses.
