Marion, IL – Storm-related damage has led to significant travel disruptions in Williamson County as multiple highways are closed to motorists.
According to the Illinois State Police Troop 10, I-57 northbound at milepost 45 is currently shut down due to downed powerlines. As a result, traffic is being rerouted onto IL-148. Additionally, IL-37 has also been closed after debris from the storm rendered the roadway impassable.
Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area and to refrain from any unnecessary travel while cleanup and power restoration efforts are underway. No estimated time of reopening was immediately provided, and motorists are advised to monitor updates from state police and local emergency management.
The closures come amid severe weather that swept through southern Illinois, causing infrastructure issues and dangerous travel conditions. Emergency crews are on the scene working to clear roadways and restore safe driving conditions as quickly as possible.
This incident highlights the importance of caution during and after severe weather events, especially in areas where utility and traffic infrastructure may be compromised.
Drivers planning to travel through southern Illinois today should consider alternate routes and remain alert to developing conditions.
