Springfield, Illinois – A tornado watch is in effect for much of Illinois through 11 p.m. Sunday as a powerful storm system sweeps across the state, bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 155 includes 47 counties, stretching from Rock Island and Peoria in the north to Alexander and Pulaski in the south. Cities like Springfield, Belleville, and Marion are all within the warning zone. The watch was issued at 3:40 p.m. CDT and remains active until 11:00 p.m.
Residents in central and southern Illinois should stay weather-aware this evening, especially in areas along I-55, I-57, and I-64. Storms may develop quickly and become severe with little warning. The primary threats include wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail larger than quarters.
Emergency managers urge residents to have multiple ways to receive alerts, charge electronic devices, and avoid travel during warnings. Tornado sirens may sound as storms approach, and people should be ready to shelter in a basement or interior room.
Additional watches or warnings could be issued later tonight as the system moves eastward. Stay tuned to local alerts and updates from the National Weather Service.
