Illinois Tornado Outbreak: Multiple Twisters Strike Central Illinois on March 15

Springfield, IL – Multiple tornadoes swept through central Illinois on March 15, causing damage across several counties, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, IL. The strongest tornado, rated EF-2, struck Piatt and Coles counties with peak winds of up to 120 mph.

According to NWS reports, the most significant damage occurred in Hammond, where an EF-2 tornado traveled 10.1 miles, toppling trees and destroying farm outbuildings. Another EF-2 tornado touched down in Neoga, tracking northeast into Coles County and damaging a high school roof, grain bins, and power poles. Two people sustained injuries in the Neoga storm.

Several weaker EF-1 tornadoes were also confirmed. In Moultrie County, a tornado near Lovington reached winds of 110 mph, causing structural damage along its 5-mile path. Another EF-1 tornado in Champaign County traveled 13.5 miles from Flatville to Gifford, mainly damaging trees and outbuildings. An EF-1 tornado near Paris in Edgar County damaged multiple homes and mobile homes before lifting near Sycamore Hills Country Club.

Despite widespread damage, no fatalities were reported. Officials urge residents to stay prepared as severe weather season continues. The NWS advises monitoring weather alerts and having an emergency plan in place.
