Chebanse, IL – An Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper suffered injuries after a driver failed to move over and struck their squad car on Interstate 57. This marks the third move-over-related crash involving ISP in 2025.
According to ISP, the crash happened on March 1, 2025, at 1:49 p.m. near mile post 302 in Chebanse. The trooper had just finished removing debris from the roadway and was returning to their vehicle when a Lincoln SUV struck the squad car from behind.
The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The SUV’s driver, 66-year-old Harold McComb of Mahomet, Illinois, also suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment.
Authorities cited McComb for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and violating Scott’s Law, which requires drivers to move over for emergency vehicles.
ISP continues urging drivers to follow move-over laws to protect first responders. Violating Scott’s Law can result in hefty fines, license suspension, or criminal charges if injuries occur.
