Springfield, IL – State police are responding to multiple crashes on Interstate 55 near Springfield due to icy road conditions.
Officials report the accidents are a result of slick roads created by early snow and freezing temperatures in the region. According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), officers are assisting motorists and urging caution for anyone traveling through the affected area.
The ISP advises drivers to slow down and move over for vehicles displaying emergency or hazard lights. Officials stress that wet pavement combined with freezing temperatures can create dangerous black ice, increasing the risk of accidents.
Authorities are asking residents to stay updated on weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travel until roads improve. Road crews are working to salt and clear problem areas along I-55 and surrounding highways.
Police recommend maintaining a safe following distance and avoiding sudden braking to reduce the chance of skidding. For real-time updates, travelers should check local traffic reports or call ISP’s traffic hotline.
