Tinley Park, IL – One unspayed female cat can lead to the birth of nearly 100 kittens in just two years, according to a local shelter’s renewed appeal this week urging residents to take immediate action by spaying and neutering.

P.A.W.S. Tinley Park shared an educational graphic and message on Tuesday explaining how the unchecked reproduction of a single cat and her offspring can quickly spiral into a major overpopulation issue. According to the shelter, each kitten can begin reproducing by four months old, exponentially increasing the number of animals in a short period of time.

“In the span of just two years, one cat can lead to nearly 100 new cats,” the post stated. “This is exactly how shelters become overcrowded, and why spaying and neutering is absolutely critical.”

The shelter noted that cats lucky enough to enter no-kill facilities often spend extended periods in cages, while many strays never find homes at all. Officials with P.A.W.S. stressed that early action is key—pet owners should have their cats altered before they reach reproductive age, and communities should support trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs for feral cats.

The post closes with a reminder that solving the cat overpopulation crisis begins at the individual level: “It ends with you… YOU making the choice to spay and neuter.”

Residents are encouraged to explore local low-cost spay/neuter options or connect with P.A.W.S. Tinley Park for support. The shelter continues to advocate for community-wide participation in preventing the cycle of feline overpopulation.
