Springfield, IL – Governor JB Pritzker announced $14.7 million in USDA grants to extend Illinois’ Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) through June 2025. The funding will enable 15 existing providers to continue supplying fresh, culturally relevant food to underserved communities.
According to state officials, the LFPA, known as IL-EATS, was launched in 2022 by the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) and the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). The program purchases food from socially disadvantaged farmers at fair market value and distributes it at no cost to food-insecure families.
“This program ensures both underserved farmers and vulnerable communities receive the support they need,” said Pritzker. “We’re creating sustainable solutions for Illinois families.”
The initiative exclusively sources food from underutilized growers, bolstering local economies while addressing food insecurity. Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton emphasized the program’s impact, stating, “Agriculture connects us all, and no one should wonder where their next meal is coming from.”
The grants highlight Illinois’ commitment to equity and sustainability, with a focus on expanding access to fresh, nutritious food in communities across the state.
