Illinois Pursuit Ends in Sheldon with Suspect Dead, Deputy Critically Injured

Sheldon, IL – Authorities have provided further details on the officer-involved shooting that left a Newton County deputy critically injured on Friday night.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident began when Iroquois County deputies pursued an armed suspect with a hostage. The pursuit crossed into Indiana, involving the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, before returning to Illinois and ending with a crash in Sheldon. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, exited his vehicle and exchanged gunfire with officers. Both Roselius and Corporal Brandon Schreiber were struck; Roselius was pronounced dead at the scene, while Schreiber remains in critical condition at a regional hospital.

The Illinois State Police are leading the investigation into the use of force during the incident.
