Palos Park, IL – Police in Palos Park are warning residents about a rise in cryptocurrency fraud, urging the public to stay cautious as scammers continue to target individuals with fake investment schemes.
According to a post shared Wednesday by the Palos Park Police Department, scammers are increasingly using phony investment platforms, impersonating public figures, and promoting “guaranteed” returns to lure victims. Authorities emphasized that these schemes typically involve pressure tactics, urging people to act quickly before a fabricated “opportunity” disappears.
“Be aware! Scammers are targeting individuals with fake cryptocurrency investment opportunities, promising high returns with little to no risk,” the department wrote in its public advisory. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
To help residents stay safe, the department shared several tips:
- Verify companies and platforms before investing.
- Never send money, cryptocurrency, or personal information to unverified sources.
- Be wary of unsolicited investment advice or offers.
- When in doubt, consult a trusted financial advisor.
The department advised anyone who believes they may have been a victim of cryptocurrency fraud to report the incident to law enforcement immediately.
The warning comes amid a nationwide rise in cryptocurrency-related scams, many of which exploit individuals’ unfamiliarity with digital currencies and the promise of fast financial gains.
