Aberdeen, SD – A late-season winter storm continues to impact portions of eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota, with the National Weather Service maintaining a Winter Storm Warning for several counties through 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Heavy snow, gusty winds, and slick roads are expected to create dangerous driving conditions throughout the evening, particularly during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, affected areas in South Dakota include Brown, Day, Marshall, Roberts, McPherson, Edmunds, Clark, Hamlin, Codington, Deuel, and Grant counties. Meanwhile, Big Stone and Traverse counties in western Minnesota are also under the warning.
Snow totals will vary by location. Some areas, including Day and Roberts counties, could receive between 2 to 4 inches of additional snow. Areas like Brown County and Codington County may see up to 2 to 3 inches of snow with wind gusts up to 35 mph. Light ice accumulation is also possible in Hamlin, Clark, Codington, Deuel, and Grant counties.
Officials warn that roads—especially bridges and overpasses—are likely to become slick and hazardous. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, motorists should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.
For real-time road updates, travelers are advised to visit 511mn.org or call 511 for Minnesota and South Dakota road conditions.
The storm is expected to taper off later this evening, with improved travel conditions anticipated by Thursday morning.
