SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois saw a boost in payroll jobs in September, with an increase of 7,100 positions while the state’s unemployment rate remained steady at 5.3%. The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) released the preliminary figures today, showing a continued trend of job growth.

According to IDES, the sectors with the most significant job gains included Private Education and Health Services, adding 4,600 jobs, and Leisure and Hospitality, which saw an increase of 3,600 positions. Government jobs also rose by 2,800. However, there were declines in Financial Activities and Professional Services, each losing 3,000 jobs.

Deputy Governor Andy Manar emphasized that Illinois’ job market remains strong and stable, with steady growth across the state. IDES continues to be a vital resource for job seekers and employers, helping connect opportunities across multiple industries.

The national unemployment rate was 4.1% in September, slightly below Illinois’ rate. Over the past year, the state added 35,400 nonfarm jobs, led by Government and Health Services.

IDES remains committed to workforce development through job fairs, hiring events, and the Illinois JobLink portal, which currently features over 87,000 job openings statewide.
