Pike County, IL — Authorities in Pike County have arrested a Springfield man allegedly tied to a multi-state theft operation involving off-road vehicles, trailers, and lawn equipment across Illinois and Missouri.
According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, between April 28 and July 22, multiple thefts were reported in Baylis, Barry, Hull, Rockport, Pleasant Hill, and Pittsfield. Stolen property allegedly included utility trailers, side-by-side utility vehicles, dirt bikes, zero-turn mowers, and four-wheelers. Investigators linked the Pike County cases to thefts in Piatt, Fayette, Franklin, and Tazewell counties in Illinois, as well as multiple Missouri jurisdictions.
A coordinated investigation led by Chief Deputy Zack Orr and involving several law enforcement agencies identified Richard A. Wilson, 47, of Springfield, as a suspect. On Aug. 4, Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wilson on a Pike County warrant for theft over $10,000 and a Morgan County, Missouri, warrant for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Authorities executed multiple search warrants, including one in the 1700 block of East Miller Street in Springfield. Investigators recovered electronic devices and other evidence allegedly connected to the thefts. Chief Deputy Orr stated the ongoing investigation is focused on recovering additional stolen property, some of which may have been sold to third parties.
“This arrest represents a significant turning point in a complex, multi-jurisdictional investigation,” Orr said, adding that more arrests and charges are expected.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Department expressed gratitude to assisting agencies for their collaboration in the case. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
