Lake Villa, IL – A Lindenhurst man was found hiding inside a Lake Villa bank Friday morning after allegedly breaking in by smashing a glass door with a brick, police said.
According to the Lake Villa Police Department, officers responded to an alarm at First American Bank, 500 E. Grand Avenue, around 7:23 a.m. and discovered forced entry through three glass doors. The bank was closed at the time.
Police deployed a drone to scan for suspects before an entry team went inside, where they found damage to the alarm system. During a search, officers discovered 44-year-old Christopher M. Knuth lying behind a large object in a northwest corner room. Authorities say he appeared to be sleeping and initially ignored commands before complying when a K-9 unit arrived.
Investigators determined Knuth allegedly used a decorative brick to break into the bank. Surveillance footage confirmed he acted alone. He has been charged with burglary, a Class 2 felony, and criminal damage to property, a Class 4 felony.
Knuth was transported to Lake County First Appearance Court on Friday. The bank remained closed as of late morning for repairs.
