Wheaton, IL – A Chicago man faces up to three decades behind bars after being convicted this week of shooting a pregnant woman in the back as she fled from him on Route 83 in Willowbrook.
Lawrence Grant, 41, was found guilty of attempted murder and multiple firearm offenses following a four-day trial, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. The charges stem from a January 28, 2022, incident in which Grant allegedly followed the woman after a confrontation at a grocery store.
Authorities said Grant opened fire as the woman drove away, striking her and causing her to crash. She was eight months pregnant at the time. The victim was rushed to a hospital, where doctors delivered her baby while she underwent surgery. Both mother and child survived.
Grant was arrested later that night at the University of Chicago Hospital. Investigators found his vehicle destroyed by fire a block away.
He remains in custody and is scheduled for sentencing on June 20. He faces 31 years to life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
