Illinois Man Charged with Attempted Murder After I-65 Shooting in Indiana

Lowell, IN – An Illinois man faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, after a shooting on Interstate 65 in Indiana on Friday night. The Indiana State Police responded around 8:15 p.m. to a report of a gunshot at mile marker 215, near the Rensselaer exit in Jasper County. The victim reported that someone shot at him while he was traveling southbound.

According to the Indiana State Police, officers from Jasper and Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Departments tracked the suspect’s vehicle south on I-65, near mile marker 166, close to Lafayette. Officers conducted a felony stop, detaining three individuals. A 9mm Glock handgun was recovered from the vehicle.

Dwayne Lumont Johnson Jr., 19, of Country Club Hills, Illinois, was charged with multiple felonies, including Level 1 attempted murder, Level 3 aggravated battery, Level 5 battery with a deadly weapon, and Level 6 criminal recklessness. Johnson’s two companions were released without charges.

The victim, who sustained a gunshot wound, was initially taken to a hospital in Lafayette before being transferred to Indianapolis. His condition is reportedly stable.
