Pontiac, IL – The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office has announced its participation in a statewide Fourth of July traffic enforcement campaign, focusing on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The initiative will run from June 20 through July 7 and includes three weekends of increased patrols around Independence Day.
According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the campaign is part of a broader safety effort in partnership with the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies across Illinois. Officials emphasized that officers will be on high alert to prevent impaired driving and to ensure seat belt use throughout the holiday period.
“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” the agency stated in the release. “If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances. Our officers will be working diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone is buckled up.”
The enforcement initiative coincides with nationally recognized campaigns such as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI,” and “Click It or Ticket.” These efforts are funded by federal traffic safety grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” public awareness campaign.
Residents are encouraged to take preventative measures, including designating a sober driver, using ride-sharing services, or relying on community-based designated driver programs. The public is also urged to report impaired drivers to authorities by pulling over and dialing 911.
Authorities remind everyone that wearing a seat belt is not just a legal requirement—it’s a critical line of defense against impaired drivers.
