Paducah, Kentucky – Scorching summer heat is gripping southern Illinois, western Kentucky, southwest Indiana, and southeast Missouri Thursday as a heat advisory goes into effect from noon until 7 p.m., pushing the heat index as high as 109°F in several communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, dangerous heat will build across the region, impacting cities like Carbondale, Evansville, Paducah, Cape Girardeau, and Mayfield. Heat index values between 105 and 109 degrees are expected, raising the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Local emergency officials urge residents to stay hydrated, remain in air conditioning when possible, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. The advisory covers heavily traveled corridors like I-24, I-57, and US-60, where heat can be even more intense on pavement.

Scattered afternoon thunderstorms could bring some temporary relief, especially in western Kentucky and southeast Missouri. Still, officials recommend checking on neighbors—especially the elderly—and never leaving children or pets in vehicles. Those working outside should take frequent breaks, wear lightweight clothing, and know the signs of heat-related illness.

The heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday, with the potential for further warnings if the heat lingers. Stay tuned for updates as conditions may change rapidly with possible evening storms.
