Chicago, IL – Torrential rain and severe thunderstorms are hammering areas along the Illinois–Indiana border this afternoon, prompting flash flood warnings and raising the risk of travel disruptions on major roadways including I-55, I-57, and U.S. 30.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, strong storms are tracking northeast through Kankakee County, southern Cook County, and into Lake and Porter Counties in Indiana. The storm system is producing intense rainfall, frequent lightning, and wind gusts up to 50 mph. Isolated tornadoes remain possible, especially in rural stretches east of I-57 and near I-65.

Cities like Joliet, Kankakee, Valparaiso, and Rensselaer are already seeing reports of water pooling on roads and reduced visibility. Low-lying areas, viaducts, and poorly drained intersections are especially vulnerable to sudden flooding. Commuters are urged to delay non-essential travel and never drive through standing water.

Utility crews are also on alert for downed power lines and tree limbs as wind and lightning impact the region.

The threat is expected to ease after 5 p.m., but additional warnings could be issued if new storms redevelop.
