Chicago, IL – Boaters on Lake Michigan are facing hazardous conditions as dense fog and high waves impact the waters near Chicago and Northwest Indiana. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. CST Friday, followed by a Small Craft Advisorybeginning at noon and lasting through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, visibility is expected to drop below 1 nautical mile this morning, making navigation difficult from Calumet Harbor, IL, to Michigan City, IN. By noon, strong north to northeast winds reaching 30 knots will create waves between 8 and 12 feet, posing risks to small vessels.
The Small Craft Advisory for areas north of Chicago, including Winthrop Harbor to Wilmette Harbor, IL, will last longer, extending until 3 a.m. CST Sunday.
Mariners, especially those with smaller boats, are urged to avoid navigating in these hazardous conditions. If travel is necessary, officials recommend using fog signals, ensuring all lights are on, and relying on radar and compass navigation.
These hazardous conditions could persist through the weekend, and boaters should stay updated with the latest forecasts before heading out.
