Illinois I-55 Closure Alert: Overnight Full Shutdowns at I-80 in Joliet Begin 9 PM Tuesday

Joliet, IL – Overnight closures of Interstate 55 at the I-80 interchange in Joliet will begin Tuesday, April 15, as crews remove steel beams from the I-80 bridge above the expressway.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, full directional closures are scheduled for two nights, affecting both southbound and northbound I-55 near Channahon and Shorewood.

On Tuesday night, southbound I-55 will be reduced to one lane between Illinois 59 and U.S. 6 starting at 9 p.m. At midnight, the westbound I-80 ramp to southbound I-55 will close. Between 1 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, southbound I-55 will be fully shut down at I-80. A detour will reroute drivers via I-80 westbound to Ridge Road, then eastbound back to I-55.

On Wednesday night, the same schedule applies for northbound I-55. Lane reductions start at 9 p.m., with a full closure at I-80 from 1 to 5 a.m. Thursday. A detour will guide traffic via Houbolt Road and I-80.
