Gallatin, IL – A freezing fog advisory has been issued for Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline, and White Counties in southern Illinois. The advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday, warning of reduced visibility and slick roads.

The National Weather Service in Paducah issued the advisory at 7:26 p.m. Saturday, cautioning residents about visibility dropping to 2 to 3 miles in some areas. The freezing fog could create hazardous driving conditions, particularly overnight. Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights, and maintain safe distances between vehicles.

According to the weather service, freezing fog forms when the air temperature is at or below freezing, and fog droplets freeze upon contact with surfaces. These conditions can lead to icy roadways, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.

Residents across Shawneetown, Carmi, McLeansboro, and Harrisburg should exercise extreme caution when traveling. Officials recommend postponing non-essential travel until the fog dissipates Sunday morning.

The advisory follows a week of fluctuating winter weather, with southern Illinois experiencing a mix of snow and rain earlier in the week. Weather patterns suggest clearing skies later Sunday as temperatures rise slightly.

For those commuting early Sunday, preparation is key. Drivers should ensure vehicles are winter-ready and allow extra travel time. Local authorities and road crews are monitoring conditions to minimize disruptions.
