Chicago, IL – Drivers planning travel across Illinois this weekend should prepare for dense fog, particularly near and north of Interstate 88. Visibility is expected to drop sharply starting Thursday morning, with lingering risks into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the dense fog may create hazardous conditions, especially during early morning hours. Travelers are advised to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra following distance on highways. Weather experts caution that localized fog patches could significantly disrupt travel, particularly for those heading home post-holiday.

In addition to fog, the weekend forecast suggests a shift toward wetter conditions. Light rain is expected Friday evening, with heavier rainfall likely Saturday afternoon. Highs will range from the upper 40s to low 50s, unseasonably warm for late December, but the combination of wet roads and low visibility could make travel difficult.

Mariners navigating Lake Michigan should also exercise caution due to elevated fog risks through Thursday night. The NWS predicts improved visibility by Saturday morning, but small craft should remain alert for changing weather conditions.

The five-day outlook shows cooler, drier weather returning by Sunday evening, with highs dropping to the 30s early next week. Drivers should remain vigilant during the foggy conditions and monitor weather updates to plan safe travel routes.

Stay informed by following NWS alerts and ensuring your vehicle’s lights and wipers are in working order before hitting the road.
