Momence, IL – Residents near the Kankakee River are urged to take precautions as flood levels remain above normal due to an ice jam. Minor flooding is forecast in Kankakee County, with campgrounds east of Momence among the threatened areas.
According to the National Weather Service, as of early Tuesday, the Kankakee River’s stage was measured at 6.1 feet, surpassing the flood stage of 5.0 feet. The ice jam is expected to cause fluctuating water levels through the week. Residents along the river, particularly near Aroma Park and the Illinois-Indiana border, should monitor updates and prepare for potential flooding.
Precautionary Measures and Forecast
The NWS emphasizes that ice jams complicate flood forecasts, making water levels unpredictable. Fluctuations could occur with little notice. Those living in the affected zones should secure belongings, avoid low-lying areas, and report flooding to authorities only if safe.
Extended Forecast
The region’s weather remains cold, sustaining the conditions for river ice. Daytime highs this week are expected to stay between 25°F and 30°F, with overnight lows dipping to the teens. Snow showers are possible Wednesday evening, potentially adding to water runoff challenges.
Authorities urge residents to check the latest updates at www.weather.gov or local news sources. The next flood statement is expected by Tuesday evening.
