Grand Forks, MN – Extreme cold and blowing snow will grip Minnesota and North Dakota today, creating dangerous conditions across the region. Wind chills as low as -50°F are expected, prompting an extreme cold warning until noon Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the dangerously low wind chills could cause frostbite in less than 10 minutes for exposed skin. Blowing snow, with gusts up to 30 mph, is expected to reduce visibility, especially in open areas and along major roadways like I-29. Highs today will only reach 16°F, while lows tonight drop to a frigid 5°F.

Looking ahead, temperatures will gradually improve on Wednesday, with a high near 16°F and decreasing clouds. Wind chills, however, will still hover below zero throughout the day. Wednesday night will be bitterly cold again, with lows near -1°F and wind gusts up to 21 mph.

Thursday will bring some relief, with sunny skies and a high of 7°F. However, wind chills may remain below zero for much of the day. Friday marks a slight warmup, with highs near 24°F and a 30% chance of snow in the afternoon and evening. By Friday night, lows will settle at 13°F, with lingering snow showers possible.

Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible, dress in layers, and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Travelers should carry emergency kits and monitor updates on road conditions.

The National Weather Service recommends planning ahead for Friday’s potential snowfall and remaining cautious on icy roads through the weekend. While the extreme cold will ease, winter conditions will persist across the region.
