Illinois – Elevated fire risk is forecast today across central Illinois, particularly along I-55, as dry conditions combine with gusty winds to create a serious wildfire hazard. Areas west of the highway, including Springfield and Decatur, face the greatest threat, with wind gusts reaching 30 mph, making fire containment challenging.
According to the National Weather Service, residents should refrain from outdoor burning and take extra precautions when handling flammable materials, such as cigarettes. Humidity levels are expected to drop below 30%, further increasing fire danger. These conditions could spark rapidly spreading fires, which may threaten homes and communities.
The extended weather forecast shows slight relief from the drought with scattered showers Wednesday and Thursday, though totals will be less than a quarter inch. The chance of rain is highest before noon today west of I-55 at 40%, while eastern areas will see a 15% to 30% chance of light showers later in the day. Unfortunately, these amounts are not expected to significantly improve drought conditions.
