Central Illinois – Strong southerly winds combined with dry soil conditions could bring blowing dust to parts of central Illinois Monday afternoon through early evening. Areas north of Interstate 70 face the greatest threat, particularly near agricultural areas in the midst of spring plowing.

According to the National Weather Service, winds will be out of the south at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts potentially reaching as high as 40 mph. The windy conditions, coupled with loose dust from fields, may reduce visibility for drivers, creating dangerous travel conditions in certain areas.

Drivers on highways, especially in rural regions, should take caution as blowing dust may appear suddenly. High-profile vehicles, including trucks and SUVs, are at higher risk of losing control in the gusty winds. Those in affected areas should avoid non-essential travel if possible, and remain vigilant on the roads.

The blowing dust risk will continue into the evening, but wind speeds will begin to decrease after dark. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued depending on the severity of the dust impacts. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
