Illinois Derecho Causes Tornado in East Peoria, Morton

East Peoria, IL – A tornado has been confirmed from Monday night’s derecho, affecting areas of East Peoria and Morton. The National Weather Service (NWS) Central Illinois office reported the tornado began in East Peoria, tracked through northern parts of Morton, and lifted north of Mackinaw. Rated an EF-1, the tornado had peak wind speeds of 95 mph.

According to the NWS, the tornado began around 8:36 p.m. CDT near Bloomington Road and Pleasant Hill Road in East Peoria. It continued along Interstate 74, damaging an industrial complex near Morton before snapping several hardwood trees. The tornado lifted shortly after passing north of Mackinaw around 8:54 p.m.

Additional surveys are ongoing. The NWS will share further findings as they evaluate the extent of the damage. No injuries or deaths have been reported. Tornadoes from the same weather system have been documented in various parts of Illinois, contributing to widespread damage and power outages.
