Moline, Ill. – Patchy dense fog is creating dangerous travel conditions this morning across parts of western Illinois and northeast Missouri, especially for drivers along and south of Interstate 80. Visibility may drop to less than a quarter mile at times, making the morning commute hazardous through at least 8 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, the thickest fog is concentrated near Burlington, Macomb, and Galesburg, with rapid changes in visibility over short distances. Commuters in the Quad Cities and along river valleys should expect slowdowns and potential travel delays.
Transportation officials urge drivers to allow extra travel time, use low-beam headlights, and maintain a safe following distance. Heavy fog can catch motorists off guard, particularly on rural highways where visibility drops suddenly. Those with early school bus routes or work commutes are most at risk of encountering dangerous conditions.
The fog is expected to gradually lift by mid-morning as temperatures rise, but drivers should remain cautious until conditions improve. Additional advisories may be issued if visibility fails to recover as expected.
