Yorkville, IL – Illinois authorities are warning residents about an increase in holiday scams involving fake USPS delivery texts. Scammers are sending fraudulent messages to unsuspecting victims, claiming issues with package deliveries and urging users to click a suspicious link.

According to the Yorkville Police Department, the scam, known as “smishing,” tricks victims into providing sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, account details, and credit card information. The messages often appear legitimate, using official-sounding language and directing recipients to fake USPS tracking links.

Officials stress that the U.S. Postal Service does not send unsolicited texts or emails with clickable links. Residents should avoid interacting with these messages, especially if they didn’t initiate a package tracking request.

The Postal Service offers free tools to track shipments but requires customers to log in securely or use its official app. Authorities advise deleting suspicious messages and reporting them to local law enforcement or the Federal Trade Commission.

Stay vigilant this season and protect your information. If you receive a suspicious message, don’t click the link—stay safe and share this warning with friends and family.
