Chicago, IL – A fresh wave of thunderstorms is expected to sweep across Illinois and western Indiana this afternoon, with the National Weather Service warning of the potential for severe weather continuing through 7 p.m. CDT.

According to the US National Weather Service Chicago office, the primary threat area spans east-central Illinois into western Indiana, where strong to severe storms could develop. Hazards include damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. The most intense storms are forecast to move northeast at speeds up to 60 mph.

The severe weather risk has lessened across parts of northern Illinois, especially areas north of Interstate 88, where the threat of widespread severe conditions has diminished.

Storms are expected to arrive in waves throughout the afternoon and early evening hours, bringing bursts of heavy rain, lightning, and strong gusts. Areas including Kankakee, Watseka, and Rensselaer remain under a Level 3 severe threat zone, while Chicago, Joliet, and Gary are positioned within a Level 2 zone.

Residents are urged to have multiple methods of receiving weather alerts and to remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Weather officials are continuing to monitor radar developments and will issue updated guidance as needed.

The main window for severe activity is between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the potential for hazardous conditions to develop rapidly during this period. Travel plans and outdoor activities should be adjusted accordingly, especially in areas south of I-80.
