Chicago, Illinois – Hazy skies and poor air quality are expected to develop across Illinois this weekend as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifts south, potentially affecting visibility and breathing conditions from Friday through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, wildfire smoke could begin impacting the region by Friday afternoon, with lingering haze continuing through the weekend. Air quality may decline, particularly in urban areas like Chicago, Aurora, and Naperville, where pollution tends to concentrate. Sensitive groups—including children, seniors, and those with respiratory issues—are advised to limit time outdoors.

The smoke arrives alongside a chance of showers and storms Friday afternoon and evening, with rain expected to clear out by midnight. Highs will range from the low 70s near Lake Michigan to low 80s inland. The haze is forecast to persist even after the rain clears, with Saturday and Sunday both likely to see smoky sunshine.

Residents are encouraged to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) regularly and reduce strenuous outdoor activity if levels rise into the moderate or unhealthy range. Additional alerts may be issued if wildfire smoke concentrations intensify.
