Wilmington, IL — Roadwork on Illinois 53 from Water Street (Illinois 102) to Wilmington-Peotone Road will begin Monday, October 14. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced intermittent lane closures due to resurfacing, with work expected to last through early December.
According to IDOT, the project includes constructing ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. Residences and businesses within the work zone will remain accessible. Drivers should expect delays, heed flaggers, and watch for posted signs. Speed limits will be enforced, and workers will be present throughout construction.
IDOT advises the public to plan for additional travel time through this stretch. This resurfacing project is part of the broader Rebuild Illinois initiative. The six-year program aims to improve 3,200 miles of highways and 9 million square feet of bridge deck. IDOT has invested $33.2 billion in transportation improvements statewide, which will benefit all modes of transit.
The Rebuild Illinois program has already completed $16 billion in improvements, including 686 bridges and 986 safety upgrades statewide.
