Illinois 48-Hour Storm Event Confirmed to Produce 28 Tornadoes

Chicago, IL – The recent 48-hour storm system that swept through Illinois and surrounding areas has now been officially confirmed to have produced 28 tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) provided the update following continued damage assessments from the July 15th derecho.

According to the NWS, the tornado count from the derecho event includes an EF-0 tornado that traveled from Glen Ellyn to Lombard, an EF-0 tornado in Villa Park, and an EF-1 tornado near Grant Park. The tornado track from Cedar Lake to Crown Point was extended through Valparaiso. Preliminary tracks have also been determined for previously confirmed tornadoes in southern Winnebago County, Manteno, and Peotone.

The NWS also reported strong straight-line winds in Hanover Park, Bartlett, Lansing, and the remainder of southern Winnebago County. These winds contributed to significant damage across the region.

This update brings the tornado count for the July 15th derecho event up to 22, tying the daily record for the forecast area. Additionally, the total for the two-day storm event on July 14-15 has reached 28 tornadoes. The NWS continues to analyze the impacts of these events and will provide further updates as necessary.
