Boise, ID – A major winter storm is set to impact Idaho starting early Thursday, bringing heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and hazardous travel conditions across the state. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for portions of south-central, southwest, and west-central Idaho, as well as parts of southeast Oregon, lasting from 5 a.m. Thursday to 11 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, total snow accumulations could reach 3 to 6 inches in the Treasure and Magic Valleys, while the mountains of Malheur and Harney Counties could see up to 12 inches. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph are expected, leading to areas of blowing and drifting snow, which may cause visibility to drop below a quarter-mile at times.
Road conditions will become dangerous, especially on highways, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers should prepare for slick surfaces and avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities recommend carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of unexpected delays.
Looking ahead to Valentine’s weekend, the forecast shows a chance of rain and snow on Saturday night, with temperatures remaining in the low 40s through Monday. Residents should continue to monitor weather updates and take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia, as wind chills could drop well below zero in some areas.
