Pocatello, ID – A powerful winter storm is set to impact eastern Idaho starting Thursday morning, bringing heavy snowfall, gusty winds, and freezing rain in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 11 a.m. Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday, cautioning residents about hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, snowfall totals could range from 4 to 24 inches depending on elevation. The Bear River Range may see the heaviest accumulations, with up to 2 feet of snow expected. Lower elevations, including the Magic Valley, Idaho Falls, and Pocatello, could receive 4 to 8 inches, with a risk of freezing rain.
Winds gusting up to 30 mph may cause blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility. The storm is expected to impact Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes, making travel potentially dangerous or impossible in some areas.
Drivers are urged to check 511.idaho.gov for real-time road conditions. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit with food, water, and a flashlight.
Snow is expected to taper off Friday afternoon, but lingering impacts could persist into the weekend.
