Pocatello, ID – A significant winter storm is set to impact central and eastern Idaho this weekend, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds that could make travel hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for multiple regions, including the Big Lost Highlands/Copper Basin, Frank Church Wilderness, Sawtooth/Stanley Basin, Sun Valley Region, and Centennial Mountains – Island Park. The storm is expected to begin late Saturday night and continue through Monday afternoon, with snowfall accumulations ranging from 5 to 24 inches depending on the area. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The hardest-hit areas could see up to two feet of snow, especially in higher elevations. Lower elevations, including Island Park and Kilgore, could see 5 to 15 inches of accumulation by Monday afternoon. Strong winds may also bring down tree branches, further increasing travel risks.

Drivers should prepare for difficult to impossible travel conditions, particularly in mountain passes and exposed areas. The Monday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted. Officials urge residents to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
