Pocatello, ID – Mountain travel across eastern Idaho will become hazardous overnight as snow begins at higher elevations, quickly creating slick roads and reduced visibility by the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect starting at midnight tonight for central Idaho ranges and expands by noon Wednesday across eastern ranges, continuing until midnight Thursday night. Snow totals will reach 5 to 10 inches above 6,500 feet, with winds gusting up to 40 mph across exposed terrain.

The most significant impacts will hit key mountain areas including the Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, Sun Valley, Island Park, and the Bear River and Caribou ranges. Routes near Galena Summit, Emigration Summit, and high-elevation passes near Ketchum and Victor will see accumulating snow and periods of blowing snow, making travel difficult at times.

Communities such as Stanley, Clayton, Ketchum, and Island Park should expect slick conditions during both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Visibility may drop suddenly during heavier snow bursts, especially in open areas where wind gusts increase.

Drivers should delay travel through high elevations if possible, carry winter gear, and check Idaho 511 for real-time road conditions. Chains may be needed on some mountain routes.

Snow continues through Thursday before gradually tapering late Thursday night. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall increases or expands to lower elevations.
