Boise, ID – Idaho State Police (ISP) are warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate troopers and demand money, according to a public alert issued Monday.
The scam involves callers pretending to be with ISP, sometimes even using the names of real officers. In one recent case, a caller identified themselves as “Captain Winans,” told the victim they had missed a court date, and then demanded $1,000 at a kiosk to avoid arrest.
According to ISP, the fraudulent callers even manipulate return calls to make it appear as though victims are reaching the official State Police line. However, ISP emphasized this is not the case.
⚠️ ISP stressed it will never call to demand money or payment over the phone.
Officials urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and avoid providing personal or financial information.
The scam mirrors similar schemes reported nationwide where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement to pressure victims into sending money quickly. Authorities are reminding Idahoans that legitimate law enforcement agencies handle fines, warrants, and court matters through official, documented processes—not over the phone.
Anyone who has been targeted is encouraged to report the incident to ISP or their local law enforcement agency.
