Idaho Falls, Idaho – Gardeners in eastern Idaho should take immediate precautions as freezing temperatures threaten crops and plants early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday for the Arco/Mud Lake Desert and Upper Snake River Plain, including Idaho Falls, Rexburg, and St. Anthony. Overnight lows may dip to 32°F, creating ideal conditions for frost development.

Communities from Craters of the Moon to the Idaho National Laboratory could see light frost capable of damaging sensitive vegetation. Residents are urged to cover tender plants, move pots indoors, or use frost cloths to reduce exposure. While this brief cold snap won’t last beyond the morning hours, it could significantly impact early planting efforts.

This is the first frost alert of the spring season for much of eastern Idaho. Similar events have historically caused setbacks for gardeners and small-scale growers across the region.

Frost risks will subside after 8 a.m. Thursday, but residents should monitor local updates in case additional advisories are issued overnight.
