Missoula, MT – A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of Montana and Idaho from Monday evening through late Tuesday due to a strong cold front bringing snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, snow accumulations are expected to vary by region. In Idaho’s Northern Clearwater Mountains, including Highway 11 from Pierce to Headquarters, 3 to 6 inches of snow is likely, with up to 10 inches in higher elevations. The Southern Clearwater Mountains, including Elk City and Highway 12, may see 1 to 6 inches of snow. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph, making travel hazardous, especially in higher passes.

In Montana, the West Glacier Region, Lower Clark Fork, and Bitterroot/Sapphire Mountains are also under the advisory. Areas such as Essex, Lookout Pass, and Lolo Pass could receive 3 to 6 inches of snow, with isolated higher amounts. Winds up to 40 mph will create blowing snow and reduced visibility. The Butte/Blackfoot Region, including Homestake Pass, may see up to 2 inches of snow with gusts reaching 45 mph.

Drivers should prepare for slippery roads and poor visibility, particularly during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Officials advise slowing down, using caution, and checking 511 for road updates.
